John Edwards awarded ‘Father of the Year’

Where was John Edwards around the time his alleged “love child” Frances Quinn Hunter was conceived?

The senator was in New York – receiving his Father of the Year Award.

Edwards accepted his June 27, 2007, honor from the Father’s Day/Mother’s Day Council exactly eight months before the child was born Feb. 27, 2008, according to a birth certificate obtained by the Charlotte Observer.

Before beginning his Father of the Year acceptance speech, Edwards told an adoring crowd, “I hate to admit it, but I am not the best parent in my family. …”

The John Edwards campaign website lists his Father of the Year Award among the senator’s accomplishments.

He then continued with a story about his fatherhood experience.

“It is true, your children learn not only from what you say, but from what you do,” he said. “Whenever they do anything that you’re proud of in your life, you’ll be able to look back on the things that you taught them both through your words and through your deeds.”

The council’s website says it presents its Father of the Year Award to “fathers who have attained success in their chosen fields, and have found the time to be role models in raising their children … .”

Frances Hunter’s birth certificate does not identify a father. She was born to Rielle Hunter, a videographer who was working on Edwards’ presidential campaign when he received the award.

When the Observer asked why a father was not named, Hunter’s attorney, Robert Gordon, said, “A lot of women do that.”

Hunter, 44, named Andrew Young, Edwards’ campaign finance director, as the father of her baby two months before Frances’ birth. He said he was the father in a statement released on a political blog.

However, the National Enquirer alleged that Edwards had been sexually intimate with Hunter while he was a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination last October. It reported Hunter was pregnant in December.

Edwards pulled out of the race for the Democratic nomination in January and endorsed Obama for president on May 14 at a Michigan rally. Late-night hosts have cracked several jokes about the suspected affair, and some say the allegations may damage Edward’s chances at a possible position in an Obama administration.

The Enquirer claimed Edwards was seen leaving the Beverly Hilton Hotel in California on July 21 after visiting Hunter and the baby. When reporters chased him down, Edwards hid in a restroom. Fox News later confirmed the incident in an interview with the security guard who escorted Edwards from the hotel after 2 a.m.

“What are they saying about me?” the guard said Edwards asked.

When the guard told Edwards that reporters were asking questions about Hunter and the child, he said the senator looked shaken and pale.

“His face just went totally white,” the guard told Fox News.

On July 23, Edwards denied the recent allegations and called the Enquirer story “tabloid trash.” Last October, he said reports of an affair with Hunter were false and that he had been faithful to his wife, Elizabeth Edwards, a breast cancer survivor.

“It’s completely untrue, ridiculous,” he said. “I’ve been in love with the same woman for 30-plus years and, as anybody who’s been around us knows, she’s an extraordinary human being, warm, loving, beautiful, sexy and as good a person as I have ever known. So the story’s just false.”

John and Elizabeth Edwards celebrated 30 years of marriage and renewed their wedding vows in July, a month after his acceptance of the Father of the Year Award.
