America is teetering on the brink of economic collapse. Our savings and investments have eroded while the costs of health care and energy are out of control. Our national debt has gone through the roof.
The world is more dangerous than ever. Our borders are no longer defended. Our courts are out of control. A majority of our judges no longer feel bound by the law or the Constitution, which has been our plumb line. Instead, they prefer to strike out on their own. Property rights and parental rights have been eroded. The institution of marriage is under attack.
Elections can be a daunting experience for any voter. There are so many issues. The candidates' positions are often couched in political doublespeak. What's a voter to do? More important, what's a Christian to do?
The polls show that Christians are about evenly divided in this election. That can mean only one of two things: We no longer know the Bible, or there are a lot of people in the churches playing a grand game. Exodus 18:21 is specific: It says, "Select responsible men (or women), men who fear God and hate dishonest gain. ..."
How can you tell which is the more responsible candidate? Which candidate sincerely fears God and hates dishonest gain?
There are no perfect candidates. Some would say that this year's presidential candidates are less perfect than ever before. Therefore, they opt to sit this one out or cast a vote for a third-party candidate with no chance to win in order to "send a message."
I urge my brothers and sisters in Christ to reconsider that option because the difference between Obama and McCain and the direction they will take this country is stark.
If you are confused about the economic issues – and let's face it, most are – go back to the basics.
Examine the stands of these two candidates —and more important, their records – on the moral issues, and vote accordingly. Then, you can rest assured that this country will be in good hands.
The Ten Commandments given to Moses are not suggestions. They represent God's moral law – and it has never changed. The first commandments are about honoring God and your earthly parents. Next comes God's law against murder. God leaves us no wiggle room when it comes to the shedding of the innocent blood of another human being.
It is no accident that abortion is the most divisive moral issue in America today. God's law may be inconvenient at times, but it is still God's law. That's why many who claim to be Christians want to keep their heads buried in the sand on this issue.
They want to pretend that science is divided on when human life begins. It isn't. The question has been settled since real-time ultrasound imaging and fiber optics gave us a window to the womb. A few years before those things were in use, the Supreme Court handed down Roe v. Wade, the decision that made abortion legal for any reason through the full nine months of pregnancy.
That is why the issue remains unsettled and volatile. That is why one candidate, Obama, has pledged his allegiance to Roe v. Wade, while giving lip service to God. The other candidate, McCain, is honoring God with his stand and, for the most part, has a record to back it up.
The Bible says, "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." God sent his Son to die for our sins. All we have to do is believe on Jesus, ask for forgiveness and turn our will over to Him.
The evidence of our salvation is a changed life. If you call yourself a Christian and you are still flirting with abortion, or flirting with voting for a candidate who condones the taking of an innocent life, no matter how small, sick or vulnerable, you are only fooling yourself about your Christian commitment – but you will not fool God!
Alexis de Tocqueville said, "Not until I went into the churches of America and heard her pulpits flame with righteousness did I understand the secret of her genius and power. America is great because America is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, America will cease to be great."
If 9/11 wasn't a wake-up call for America, then the financial meltdown of 2008 should be. How many more warnings will God give us before he lifts his hand of protection that has been over this country for more than 200 years? He did not spare the children of Israel. He will not spare the United States of America!
