Hamas: Our chief ‘100 percent fine’

Hamas leader Mahmoud Al-Zahar in BBC World News interview

JERUSALEM – Hamas today denied its top leader in Gaza, Mahmoud Al-Zahar, was injured during Israel’s 22-day offensive against the terrorist group in Gaza.

“He’s 100 percent fine and is in good health. He is in Gaza. All of the reports stating otherwise are untrue and Israeli misinformation,” Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum told WND.

A number of other Hamas figures, including Al-Zahar’s son, his assistant and Hamas’ chief political adviser in Gaza, Ahmed Yousef, told WND Al-Zahar was not injured.

Still, Al-Zahar himself has not answered his personal cell phone. Several requests for an interview through his office the past week were postponed. Al-Zahar has granted dozens of interviews to WND and usually has returned calls to the news service within 24 hours.

Last week, reports emerged in a Kuwaiti newspaper quoting unnamed Palestinian sources in Gaza claiming al-Zahar was injured during Israel’s operation and was evacuated to an Egyptian hospital for treatment.

Although Al-Zahar has not emerged, there could be another explanation aside from health issues.

Israel recently targeted scores of Hamas terrorists in Gaza, including Siad Siam, who was killed in a surgical strike two weeks ago. The international media described Siam as Hamas’ “interior minister,” implying he was a politician, but he also was the chief of Hamas’ executive force, a Hezbollah-like guerrilla militia heavily involved in terrorism.
