‘Do it for the children’?

By Craige McMillan

Aren’t you constantly amazed by the knowledge and unerring wisdom expressed by Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats?

My goodness! During the recent campaign (which began in November 2000, the year George W. Bush was elected president), everything the Democrats sought to do to us was always and unwaveringly “for the children.”

  • “More money for schools (and kill the test standards in No Child Left Behind). Do it for the children.”
  • “Higher taxes! We have to do it for the children!”
  • “Stop the Iraq war! Do it for the children!”

Yes, “do it for the children” became the Democrats’ moral compass. So you can imagine the surprise when – a mere five days into the new “all Democrat, all the time” administration, we were informed that there had been a typo in the Democrat slogan.

Yeah, a typo, that’s it. Just a little, teensy weensy word that everybody repeated over and over, and nobody even noticed during the last eight years. Really, a very small word, no bigger than “is”.

Mrs. Pelosi announced the correction during a question about the “no banker left behind” bailout stimulus program. See if you can catch the correction in this interchange between George Stephanopoulos and Speaker Pelosi on ABC’s “This Week,” as reported by Drudge on Sunday morning:

Stephanopoulos: “Hundreds of millions of dollars to expand family planning services. How is that stimulus?”

Speaker Pelosi: “Well, the family planning services reduce cost. They reduce cost. The states are in terrible fiscal budget crises now, and part of what we do for children’s health, education and some of those elements are to help the states meet their financial needs. One of those – one of the initiatives you mentioned, the contraception, will reduce costs to the states and to the federal government.”

Stephanopoulos: “So no apologies for that?”

Pelosi: “No apologies. No. we have to deal with the consequences of the downturn in our economy.”

So there we have it. Less than a week into the new administration and “do it for the children” has become “do it to the children”. Here’s the video, lest you think this characterization is anything less than dead-accurate.

Well, who would have thought? Fewer babies equals fewer children equals fewer teenagers equals fewer adults equals fewer people of all ages buying things. Viola! Economic stimulus. And to think all those pricey economists have had it all wrong all these years.

While Democrats and Republicans won’t agree on much over the next two years, I think there is one thing we can all agree on. Nancy Pelosi is very, very fortunate to be married to a rich husband. This is not the type of market acumen that builds new business empires. Whatever your product or service, it’s tough to sell very much of it to dead people.

On the other hand, if you are a communist – which means that you believe that everything everybody produces belongs to the government, to be doled out at will as bureaucratic officials see fit – well, it makes perfect sense, doesn’t it? Under communism, government owns the pie. The fewer pieces they distribute, the more they keep for themselves.

Babies and old people are a drain on the economy. So, to stimulate the economy, let’s get rid of them!

“No apologies?”

“No apologies. No. We have to deal with the consequences of the downturn in our economy.”
