A blow to ‘Buy American’ provisions

Those who have questioned whether President Obama would stand by campaign promises to support U.S. workers or succumb to free trade pressures have received a clear sign that the administration will side with globalists, Jerome Corsi’s Red Alert reports.

President Obama submitted to globalist demands as the administration quietly watered down the “Buy American” provisions placed in the nearly $1 trillion economic stimulus plan.

The compromise, engineered in the Senate, was to add language guaranteeing the “Buy American” provisions would be “applied in a manner consistent with U.S. obligations under international agreements.”

“In other words, the free-trade presidents, now stretching from Carter to Obama, have won,” Corsi wrote. “With the added language, NAFTA, CAFTA and the World Trade Organization will continue to trump ‘Buy American’ efforts to support the struggling U.S. worker.”

Obama’s campaign promises to renegotiate trade agreements such as NAFTA and reverse the trend of millions of U.S. manufacturing jobs lost to outsourcing may not materialize, Corsi said.

“The only winners in this strategy are the usual ones – the multinational corporations, as well as the lawyers and lobbyists who work for them,” he wrote.

Under the Obama administration as under the Bush administration, efforts to get the U.S. worker on a fair basis in free-trade agreements have been labeled “protectionist” by free-trade advocates who claim the only way to get the U.S. economy out of the slump is to continue sending jobs overseas.

Corsi called the attack on the “Buy American” provisions “predictably vicious.”

Tom Donohue, president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, said, “Such provisions would cost American jobs, trigger retaliation from our trading partners, slow economic recovery by delaying shovel-ready infrastructure projects, and cede our leadership role as a long-standing proponent of free and fair trade and global engagement.”

Free-trade proponent Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., asked for the “Buy American” provisions to be removed from the bill altogether.

Meanwhile, Obama will make his first foreign trip next month to Canada.

“We will get an opportunity to see if he will revive the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America, or SPP, annual summit meetings with Canada and Mexico,” Corsi wrote.

His book, “The Late Great USA,” and multiple WND articles have drawn so much public attention to the SPP that the leaders of the three countries have temporarily backed off pushing the SPP or the North American integration effort.

Now Red Alert’s author, whose books “The Obama Nation” and “Unfit for Command” have topped the New York Times best-sellers list, said he “remains confident Obama will pursue the North American integration effort under NAFTA, even if the SPP name has become politically radioactive.”

Corsi received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in political science in 1972. For nearly 25 years, beginning in 1981, he worked with banks throughout the U.S. and around the world to develop financial services marketing companies to assist banks in establishing broker/dealers and insurance subsidiaries to provide financial planning products and services to their retail customers. In 1999, he began developing Internet-based financial marketing firms, also adapted to work in conjunction with banks.

In his 25-year financial services career, Corsi has been a noted financial services speaker and writer, publishing three books and numerous articles in professional financial services journals and magazines.
