A non-beheading Muslim speaks out

By Letter of the Week

That fat boy Hassan “the chopper” was not even a devout Muslim to begin with (“Beheader hubby was hero to U.S. Muslim activists”).

I will state one thing that is certain to me: Islam practiced today is not the same Islam of 1,400 years ago. Back then it was a civilizing force, one that basically had a lot to do with the rebirth of Western Civilization after the Dark Ages. The Islam as practiced today is nothing but a shadow of what it was back then, with a bunch of well-funded, ignorant fanatics and fundamentalists wanting to shut off all debate among Muslims. We have allowed ourselves to stagnate and be trapped in a never-ending cycle of violence, ignorance and insecurity.

But is Islam really what it appears to be, judging from the actions of its worst practitioners today?

Women and men are equal in the eyes of God, according to the Quran, but there are differences. Each has a role to play within a marriage, and the duties are outlined to make things easier for both husband as well as wife. Now I admit that this is not the case in more than a few Muslim households, and in such cases, no quarter should be given by U.S. law enforcement agencies when it comes to domestic violence and what I call “dishonor killings.”

Polygamy is allowed in the Quran, but is not the ideal model to follow. A monogamous marriage between one man and one woman is the ideal marriage. And besides, polygamy was practiced in ancient Israel, wasn’t it? What has been expressively forbidden is adultery, along with incest and forcible sexual intercourse (rape). Now I know that there are people, including self-styled religious Muslims who would disagree with me on this, but they are welcome to debate me on this point at any time.

Violence other than when carried out by proper authorities for either war or punishment can be considered to be a crime, outside of spanking children.

Hatred leads to darkness in the heart. The Quran makes it clear that to forgive and overlook is better than to be retributive.

I have no problems with the U.S. Constitution. To me, it is just what is needed in all countries in the world, and not just in Muslim countries.

The values destroying Europe today have little to do with Islam and more to do with secular progressivism, socialism, godlessness, political correctness, extreme pacifism, anti-Semitism and a proclivity to tolerate and accommodate the worst dregs of society. Europe has been on a self-destructive course for many decades; it has little to do with Islam. Hopefully, America will not follow in Europe’s wake.

We’ve had conflicts raging around the world for thousands of years. Islam, on the other hand, has not been around for thousands of years. And even if Islam were to die out, peace would not follow. In the end, we’re all still human beings. Human nature is basically the same from one end of the world to another. We’re flawed. Religion, politics, race, nationality all play central roles in various conflicts around the world. My solution to stopping conflicts around the world would be to:

  1. 1. Identify the aggressor(s);
  2. Neutralize the aggressor(s) through military means and by cutting off the money flow that sustains it;
  3. Use diplomacy to lay out terms for a final peace ONLY AFTER the aggressor has been thoroughly defeated and demoralized and admits it;
  4. If another conflict breaks out, go back to step 1.

I believe that Israel was fully justified in going after Hezbollah as well as Hamas. But it didn’t complete Step 2 in either case. There can be no diplomacy until Step 2 has been completed.

Take care.

Nabil Ahmad
