Pelosi’s ‘immigration laws un-American’ draws reaction

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., has called raids by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, which is following laws established by Congress, “un-American.”

And she’s drawing a reaction.

Pelosi asked an audience at St. Anthony’s Church in San Francisco last Saturday, “Who in this country would not want to change a policy of kicking in doors in the middle of the night and sending a parent away from their families?”

Roy Beck, executive director of Numbers USA, a nonpartisan group advocating a return to “logic” in immigration policy and practice, was interviewed by RadioAmerica.org.

His interview is posted here:

Beck was asked how Pelosi’s comments should be interpreted and to assess the economic impact of the government’s failure to enforce immigration laws.

He also responded to questions about the future of an e-verify program and about the prospects for an amnesty bill.

Pelosi, according to Fox News, told the audience the raids “must be stopped.”

“What value system is that? I think it’s un-American. I think it’s un-American.”

The House speaker, according to Fox News, came to the San Francisco church at the invitation of Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D-Ill., who has launched a 17-city, cross-country tour called United Families.

The aim of the effort, says Gutierrez, is to put a human face on the immigration debate.
