Republican lawmakers offered an alternative to plans by President Obama and congressional Democrats to overhaul the nation's health-care system, introducing legislation that would provide Americans with tax credits to pay for universal access to health insurance.
"We don't need bigger government. We need the individual to be able to choose his or her own health care," said Rep. Devin Nunes, a co-sponsor of the bill.
"We take all the money that we're spending, all the various government programs, and we basically give it out in the form of a refundable tax credit so that people can go out and choose the doctor and health-care coverage of their choice."

The Republican plan "empowers people to make their own decisions on health care," continued Nunes.
"Universal access for everyone, it doesn't cost the government any more money and at the end of the day you're going to be able to pick your own doctor."

Critics of Obamacare say a government takeover of health care will result in rationed care with bureaucrats making decisions for patients.
Nunes contends the Republicans "have a credible alternative on the table" and the government-run plan proposed by Obama "will be a complete disaster."
