PAC targets congressman for befriending 'birthers'

A Vermont-based political action committee is targeting an incumbent California congressman for being a friend to "birthers" and backing "those right-wing conspiracy theorists."

Democracy for America, a PAC founded by former Governor Howard Dean and dedicated to making the Democratic Party more "progressive," sent out an e-mail asking supporters to help defeat "Tea Party Republican John Campbell," who the e-mail describes as "an example of the worst Republicans have to offer the country."

"You know those right-wing conspiracy theorists demanding to see President Obama's birth certificate?" asks the e-mail sent out by Matt Blizek, field director at Democracy for America. "Well, these so-called 'birthers' have a representative in Congress backing them up – California's John Campbell."

The PAC's criticism stems from Campbell's co-sponsorship of H.R. 1503, known as the Presidential Eligibility Act, in March of last year.

The measure sought to "amend the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971 to require the principal campaign committee of a candidate for election to the office of President to include with the committee's statement of organization a copy of the candidate's birth certificate … to establish that the candidate meets the qualifications for eligibility to the Office of President under the Constitution."

Though Campbell said in an interview with MSNBC's Chris Matthews that "as far as I know," Barack Obama is a natural-born American citizen and thus eligible to serve as president, Campbell asserted the Presidential Eligibility Act was still necessary to give "implementing legislation" – in other words, a process for enforcing – the Constitution's presidential eligibility requirements contained in Article 2, Section 1.

Matthews, however, laughed at Campbell, accusing the congressman of actually "feeding the wacko wing of your party" and "playing to the crazies."

Democracy for America's e-mail includes an appeal to supporters to campaign for Campbell's Democrat challenger, Beth Krom, by calling voters in Campbell's district and urging them to vote for Krom.

"We're only calling already-identified Democratic voters," the e-mail assures supporters. "We'll provide the script, the numbers, everything. Beth just needs you to provide the people-power."

The e-mail concludes, "With your help we will send a Tea Party Republican packing in November."

Some have alleged that he was not born in Hawaii in 1961 as he has written, or that the framers of the Constitution specifically excluded dual citizens – Obama's father was a subject of the British crown at Obama's birth – from being eligible for the office.

Besides Obama's actual birth documentation, the still-concealed documentation for him includes kindergarten records, Punahou school records, Occidental College records, Columbia University records, Columbia thesis, Harvard Law School records, Harvard Law Review articles, scholarly articles from the University of Chicago, medical records, his files from his years as an Illinois state senator, his Illinois State Bar Association records, any baptism records and his adoption records.
