PALM BEACH, Fla. – In the aftermath of the Tucson massacre that left six people dead and 14 injured including U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, radio host Rush Limbaugh proffered his own solution to help make the nation a safer, more civil place: prevent "liberals" from owning guns and sending e-mails.

"I've got the solution to most crime in America," Limbaugh said today on his top-rated program. "From this day forward, somebody propose it. Liberals should not be allowed to buy guns. Just that simple."

But Limbaugh, in his usual irreverent style, didn't stop there.
He continued: "Liberals should have their speech controlled and not be allowed to buy guns. I mean if we want to get serious about this, if we want to face this head on, we're gonna have to openly admit liberals should not be allowed to buy guns, nor should they be allowed to use computer keyboards or typewriters, word processors or e-mails, and they should have their speech controlled.

"If we did those three or four things, I can't tell you what a sane, calm, civil, fun-loving society we would have. Take guns out of the possession, out of the hands of liberals. Take their typewriters and their keyboards away from 'em. Don't let 'em anywhere near a gun and control their speech, and you would wipe out 90 percent of the crime, 85 to 95 percent of the hate and 100 percent of the lies from society."

Limbaugh and others on the political right have been personally attacked by some on the left as being somehow complicit in the rampage of alleged shooter Jared Loughner through use of incendiary rhetoric.
But Limbaugh said if a political mind-set were to blame, a strong case could be made for blaming the left:
What would you do if you're told this every day by people you vote for, by people you support, if the movies you go see tell you that your government was behind the downing of the [World] Trade Center and the Pentagon on 9/11 as the movie "Zeitgeist" did, the documentary? If you were told by Michael Moore that all of this was done on purpose, if you're told that the rich have taken what's rightfully yours, if you're bombarded with this every day as part of a political message, what would you be capable of doing? What might it drive you to do?
We could just as easily say that the left is responsible for Tucson and events like Tucson because it is the left which routinely, regularly, continually agitates, abuses, punishes, fines, name-calls. The left creates this environment in which the individual is smothered, treated as worthless and degraded. The left is constantly telling us how horrible we are, how horrible our country is. The left's leader runs around the world apologizing for this country, how unfair and unjust our economic system is, how our major corporations are out to kill you, to screw you, to rip you off. They create this environment of pessimism, of self-hate and loathing, desperation. They turn citizen against citizen, blacks against whites, men against women, Hispanics against whoever, you name it. People are constantly at war with each other.
