The press secretary for President Barack Obama says he's unaware of the Maryland Dream Act, which was signed into law recently but now apparently will be suspended until voters determine its fate.
Obama prominently has taken a position on the issue, posting a statement, "I want to sign the DREAM Act into law, but I need your help to do the hard work of changing minds and changing votes, one at a time."

The statement is on his campaign website for the 2012 election, and it seeks support from the public for his agenda.
It was Les Kinsolving, WND's correspondent at the White House, and the second-most senior reporter on the White House beat, who raised the issue.

"Will the president speak out in support of Maryland's giving illegal aliens in-state tuition at colleges and universities?" he asked at today's White House briefing.
"I'm not aware of that issue, Lester, so I don't have an answer for you," said White House press secretary Jay Carney.

"You're not aware of that issue?"
"I'm not," Carney said.
According to the Baltimore Sun, there are more than enough valid signatures on petitions to force a statewide vote on the law.
It is expected to be on the November 2012 ballot

The dispute arose when Maryland lawmakers voted to give in-state higher education tuition rates to illegal aliens if they have attended at least three years of Maryland high schools and whose families have filed tax documents.
The Sun reported the approval of the law in the waning hours of the legislative session came largely along party lines, with Democrats advocating for the illegals. The Senate approved it 27-19 and the House 74-65.
On a blog at New American, R. Cort Kirkwood wrote, "Welcoming and supporting illegals is not just a priority for Democrats in the U.S. Congress, who are pushing a resurrected DREAM Act for illegal aliens who party officials hope will cast Democrat ballots.
"Apparently, it's become a priority for leftists in the states as well. Thus, in the waning hours of the last session of Maryland's General Assembly, the DREAM Act passed the House of Delegates 74-65."
