Obama admin under attack: Rand Paul files for key resignation

U.S. Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky.

The Obama administration continues to come under heavy attack as financial troubles plague the nation more than two and a half years into the president’s term.

Now, at least one high-profile senator is taking action to try to push the U.S. treasury secretary out of his position.

“The economy is in death throes right now, and [Obama] can’t accept any blame or responsibility for it,” Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., said tonight on “Hannity” on the Fox News Channel. “I’m gonna introduce legislation tomorrow that will call for the resignation of Timothy Geithner.”

“The stock market has basically given a vote of no confidence to this president,” Paul continued. “It really says that everything they’re doing is not working. Everything has gotten worse. Unemployment’s gotten worse. Gas prices have doubled. The economy is growing, if at all, at a very anemic pace. We’re not gonna get out of this until we get a business-friendly administration.”

Paul, a member of the tea-party caucus, also defended the tea party against claims the anti-tax group was somehow to blame for the past week’s economic problems.

“It would be funny if it weren’t so tragic,” Paul explained. “Blaming the tea party is sort of like blaming the fireman when he comes to put out the fire.

“You know a lot of us were elected to go to Washington to put out the fire, to handle the debt. … Now they’re gonna blame the debt on us when we came to Washington to try to fix the mess that they’ve gotten us in? It’s really ludicrous on the face of it, but I think it’s an example of really the failure of leadership that [Obama] will not accept responsibility. I think we’re getting to the point where he’s gonna have a failed presidency.”

In April, Treasury Secretary Geithner had said there was “absolutely” no chance the U.S. credit rating would be downgraded by Standard and Poor’s, but a downgrade did take place last week, causing further uncertainty in the financial sector.

Paul is just the latest to push for the resignation of Geithner.

Last week, Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., said, “We were warned by all the credit agencies that a failure to deal with the debt would lead to this downgrade in our credit rating. But instead, the president submitted a budget that had a $1.5 trillion deficit, [with] a $2.4 trillion blank check on top of that. President Obama is destroying the foundations of our economy, one beam at a time. I call on the president to seek the immediate resignation of Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner and submit a plan that balances the budget in year. Turn the economy around and put our people back to work.”

This morning on “Fox & Friends,” Reince Priebus, chairman of the Republican National Committee, also urged the ouster of Geithner.

“Well, we can’t get rid of the president, who’s, you know, in a constant state of denial,” Priebus said, “but we have a treasury secretary who’s overseen policies that this president’s put in place that have just made everything completely worse and turned our economy into a disaster.”
