Mitt Romney has attacked Republican rival Newt Gingrich for the first time, branding him a "lifelong politician" and a cosseted pillar of the unpopular Washington establishment.
In a sign of growing alarm at the former Speaker's surging poll numbers, Mr Romney said he had "by far" the best chance of defeating Barack Obama and tried to cast doubt on Mr Gingrich's economic credibility.
