President Obama made a surprise visit at today's daily White House news briefing to chastise House Republicans, warning, "Taxes will go up in 11 days – unless they put politics aside. Let's not play brinksmanship."
After spending five minutes demanding Republicans give in to the Democrat plan for a two-month payroll tax cut extension – instead of the House Republicans' year-long extension of the break – Obama refused to take questions from at least two dozen reporters who called out as he left the briefing room.

The president began at 2 p.m., repeated what White House Press Secretary Jay Carney had already said a number of times in his press briefing scheduled for 12:50, which began nearly 30 minutes late.

Carney allowed only 13 of the 46 reporters present to ask any questions at all – allowing CBS, AP and Reuters to ask four questions each.
