The Standard & Poor's 500 index closed 2011 a tiny fraction of a point — 0.04 — below where it started the year, ending up, oddly enough, with a 0.00% change.
For the last day of trading before the new year, the S&P closed at 1,257.60, up 5.4 points or 0.4% for the session.
