(STUART NEWS, FLORIDA) — When Craig Espenshade saw the flailing arms of a woman caught in a rip current near Stuart Beach last year, he said there was only one thing to do.
He jumped in the turbulent surf and pulled the woman to shore.
Espenshade, 50, was awarded the national Carnegie Medal for heroism.
“I’m not a hero,” he said Wednesday afternoon outside his downtown Jensen Beach home. “It was just the response I had.”
