(POLITICO) Obama administration Education Secretary Arne Duncan on Monday came out in support of legalizing gay marriage, drawing praise from gay-rights advocates and racheting up the pressure even more on President Barack Obama who has refused to publicly embrace same-sex marriage.
Duncan's comments follow remarks by Vice President Joe Biden on Sunday that he is "absolutely comfortable" with gay marriage, a stance his office immediately sought to walk back, saying Biden's views are still "evolving" like the president's.
Duncan's support elicited praise from gay rights advocates, who noted he is the third member of Obama's cabinet to publicly embrace gay marriage (including Biden). Housing and Urban Development chief Shaun Donovan was the first to back same-sex unions in November.
