Marriage amendment passes in N.C.

(CHARLOTTE OBSERVER) — North Carolina voters on Tuesday rewrote the state constitution, approving an amendment that defines marriage between a man and woman as the only legal union.

With returns from about 35 percent of the state’s precincts, Amendment One was getting about 56 percent approval from voters. The Associated Press said at 9:15 p.m. that it projects the issue will pass.

That makes North Carolina the 31st state — and the last in the South — to adopt a law that prohibits same-sex marriage.
