(POLITICO) Mitt Romney's campaign says it wants no part of a plan by Republican strategists to attack President Obama by highlighting his ties to pastor Jeremiah Wright.
"It’s clear President Obama’s team is running a campaign of character assassination," said Romney Campaign Manager Matt Rhoades. "We repudiate any efforts on our side to do so.”
The New York Times reported Thursday that multimillionaire TD Ameritrade founder Joe Ricketts has commissioned a plan to revisit Obama's relationship with Wright. The plan -- not yet approved by Ricketts -- would have dropped a bomb on the race near convention time, returning the president to a subject that even his supporters concede nearly derailed Obama's 2008 White House bid.
