WASHINGTON – Turkey wants the six-point plan of United Nations special representative Kofi Annan to be implemented by Syria, but at this point the plan is all but dead, given the continuing violence between well-armed opposition forces and the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, according to a report in Joseph Farah’s G2 Bulletin.
The Sunni Turkish regime has expressed outrage at the growing violence, especially the massacres in Homs and then Houla, in neighboring Syria. Turkey also is the sanctuary for the opposition leadership seeking to overthrow al-Assad, a member of the Shi’ite offshoot Alawite clan.
However, the Turkish government has not been highly critical of al-Assad personally, although it is seeking to have the Annan plan carried out in stages and is seeking an orderly removal of al-Assad.
It is pushing for an orderly succession by Syrian Vice President Farouk al-Sharaa.
“We previously proposed this a number of times,” said Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu. “We would accept any transition that would restore the people’s trust and make people feel secure in that country.”
He added if there can be such an orderly transition of power, it wouldn’t be too late, considering the country now is on the verge of a civil war.
What appears to be a glimmer of hope short of that prospect is that new opposition leader Abdulbasit Seyda is suggesting the same thing.
Al-Assad, however, may be holding onto power, recognizing that the opposition lacks any unified leadership.
Still, Turkey is holding out hope that al-Assad will agree to be replaced by al-Sharaa, but the Syrian president hasn’t responded to this proposal.
