(SUN-SENTINEL) — The Bible has a lot to say about the evils of gluttony. It’s one of the Seven Deadly Sins.
Still, almost everyone eats too much on Thanksgiving Day, and the weeks leading up to Christmas are filled with parties, alcohol, fried foods and rich desserts.
Aware that these days of indulgence are approaching, some pastors are trying to get their congregations in shape, with vigorous exercise programs supported by biblical passages that many churchgoers had never before connected with their health.

One favorite: “May your whole spirit, soul and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ” (1Thessalonians 5:23).
“God wants us to be healthy,” said the Rev. Russell Silverglate of Hammock Street Church west of Boca Raton. “There are more than 160 verses on gluttony in the Old and New Testament. We forget that part.”
