Are you ready for a scary story?
I know it’s Halloween, but this is more terrifying than ghosts and goblins and vampires.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: If Barack Obama is re-elected Nov. 6 for a second term, he will declare a full-scale war on his domestic opposition.
There may not be another free and fair election in America.
I would expect due process to go the way of the horse and buggy.
I think he will move to shut down and destroy all independent media.
In fact, I think his biggest critics will be rounded up in the name of national security.
Last week, for instance, with little fanfare, Obama issued an executive order establishing something that sounds so innocent on the surface – but it could prove to be a vehicle for the kind of political putsch I am describing.
It establishes the “White House Homeland Security Partnership Council.”
What’s the purpose?
As Obama put it, to advance the federal government’s use of local partnerships to address homeland-security challenges. He claims to be doing it under the authority of the Constitution.
Why is such a council needed? Don’t we already have a Department of Homeland Security that works with local governments?
Of course we do.
But that’s not good enough for the power-hungry Obama.
He wants to be able to dictate who gets to participate in these local partnerships – and they don’t have to be local law enforcement or local government officials to do so. These partnerships will be with “the private sector, nongovernmental organizations, foundations and community-based organizations.” All of whom will be handpicked by Obama and those federal bureaucrats he appoints.
Essentially, Obama wants to deputize “community organizers” like him to determine who represents a real threat to the republic.
Maybe this is what Obama once called for when he suggested, as first reported in this column more than four years ago, by the way, the creation of “a civilian national security force that’s just as well-funded” as the U.S. military.
While campaigning for his first term July 2, 2008, in Colorado Springs, Obama said this: “We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we’ve set. We’ve got to have a civilian national security force that’s just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded.”
These words have haunted me ever since.
Obama has never explained what he meant.
He’s never been called to account for that remark.
Doesn’t this sound like police-state talk to you?
The U.S. Army alone has nearly 500,000 troops. That doesn’t count reserves or National Guard. In 2007, the U.S. defense budget was $439 billion.
Is Obama serious about creating some kind of domestic security force bigger and more expensive than that? Is this part of his second-term agenda?
If not, why did he say it? What did he mean?
And what is this new homeland security bureaucracy he’s creating to operate under his own direction?
Not to put too fine a point on it, but where does he see in the Constitution the justification for the federal government or the president enlisting such a domestic army?
I think it’s worth recalling here that just over a year ago both houses of Congress unwisely passed the defense reauthorization bill that killed the concept of habeas corpus – legislation that authorized the president to use the U.S. military to arrest and indefinitely detain American citizens without charge or trial.
That legislation would empower a lame-duck Obama to use all of the power of the federal government – constitutional and unconstitutional – to target his political enemies.
If any Republican, conservative, independent journalist, pro-life activist, returning veteran, gun-rights activist, constitutionalist, Bible believer or critic of Obama thinks they will be safe in a second term under this would-be despot, they had better think again – real fast.
