Despite recently being condemned for ranting from the church pulpit that “white people are going to hell,” Rev. Joseph Lowery will be attending President Barack Obama’s election night party in Chicago.
Lowery, who delivered the benediction at Obama’s inauguration in 2009, garnered international headlines for his statements at St. James Baptist Church in Forsyth, Ga., when he was part of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference tour to encourage black people to vote for Obama.
Apparently the negative attention for the anti-white statements from Lowery, who was awarded Presidential Medal of Freedom by Obama in 2009, wasn’t enough to warrant having his invitation to the party in Chicago revoked.
It should be noted the Presidential Medal of Freedom is the nation’s highest civilian award.
The Monroe County Reporter also quoted Lowery as attacking black people in Georgia who don’t vote, saying, “I don’t know what kind of a n—– wouldn’t vote with a black man running.”
The quote continued, “All that he did with the stimulus was genius. Nobody intelligent would risk this country with Romney.”
The Daily Caller would report that Rev. Lowery was “joking” about the “all whites will go to hell” remark, where he said, “It was a joke” that was supposed to show the perspective of a young militant, “When I said it, I said it was a joke, I identified it as a joke.”
Despite trying to play it off as a joke, The Monroe County Reporter reported that Lowrey’s statements were taken seriously by those in attendance, saying, “Forsyth Mayor John Howard, a member of St. James who opened Saturday’s program, said he was ‘pretty shocked’ by Lowery’s comments. He said if a speaker had made the same comments about black people, he would have gotten up and left.”
