I understand that given the nature of the media it is all but irresistible for the press to cover events such as the shooting murder-suicide case of Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher prior to possessing pertinent facts. Given the bias of those in the media, I can also understand NBC sports guru Bob Costas engaging in an abysmally ignorant anti-gun rant following the Belcher tragedy, which quickly became as much of a story as the shootings themselves.
Reactions to the Costas diatribe ranged from the sublime to the ridiculous; some called for him to be fired (the ridiculous), while others minimized the significance of his words since, of course, he is just a sports announcer who is entitled to his opinion.
While Costas is entitled to his opinion, I must still beg to differ. If human beings are prone to being influenced by celebrities with intelligence levels far beneath that of Costas, then it’s no great leap to surmise that many NBC Sports viewers might be influenced by his anti-gun oratory, even if he is just a sports announcer with an opinion.
In any case, liberal fearmongering and histrionics followed this high-profile incident of gun violence like stink after … well, you know. As some will be aware, I was involved in a lively discussion on Fox News’ “Hannity” television program on Dec. 3 with radio host Leo Terrell, who waxed unintelligible in his hostility and near-incoherence in defense of gun control.
Following the Belcher shootings, Kansas City columnist Jason Whitlock claimed in an interview that the National Rifle Association is the “new Ku Klux Klan,” because it allegedly advocates arming black youth. Some conspiratorial blather about “loading up our community with drugs” was also mentioned. A Whitlock column also served to fuel Costas’ rant on NBC; both the column and Whitlock’s interview illustrate that he is either profoundly disingenuous as a matter of habit, or utterly brainless.
Both Whitlock and Terrell’s meanderings through the delusional are stellar examples not only of the ignorance of liberals in general, but of the success liberals have had in indoctrinating blacks into revisionist history (among many other things). Whitlock is either too ignorant or too much of an ideologue to know that the NRA was a high-profile supporter of blacks’ Second Amendment rights dating back to before the Civil Rights Movement.
As I intimated on “Hannity,” I find it both ironic and sad when I see blacks come out for gun control measures, particularly since the earliest gun-control legislation in America was aimed expressly at compromising blacks’ rights under the Second Amendment. Historian, author and Second Amendment expert Clayton E. Cramer contends that the historical record provides ample proof that there has always been an undercurrent of racism behind gun-control legislation, and that at one time, gun-control laws were an openly stated and understood device for keeping the black population in check.
Liberal blacks who defend gun control on the basis of violent crime in the inner cities are also off base in overlooking that these urban areas have been under the complete political control of liberals for decades. It is the destructive social policies of the left that have precipitated the dysfunction that leads to violence in the black community. Indoctrinated blacks, of course, do not see the method behind the madness and thus eagerly embrace the simpleton’s impossible fix: Erase guns from the equation. Like so many other Americans, blacks also accept at face value politicians’ feigned concern for our safety.
As we have seen from years of tedious gun-control arguments and activism – some of which have resulted in significant capitulation even from ostensible defenders of the Second Amendment – it matters little that there is no correlation whatsoever between the availability of guns and violent crime. Guns have always been plentiful in America – so why the increasing drive to control them? Simple: Societal dysfunction fostered by the left has led to increasing levels of violence, some of which is perpetrated with firearms.
Once again, we have a problem liberals have created, and which they now intend to “solve” through the stultification of our civil liberties – always for our own good.
The bottom line is that Americans need to wake up to the fact that (as I also said on “Hannity”) all gun-control measures are efforts on the part of the political left to disarm Americans. As governments have known for millennia, unarmed populations are infinitely easier to control than armed ones. This effort will continue to move “Forward,” particularly since Barack Obama was re-elected.
The Second Amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America was intended to facilitate citizens’ protection from a tyrannical government should the occasion ever arise. In layman’s terms, this means militarily engaging the operatives of a criminal regime – with guns. The current administration is bristling with radical Marxists, and I would wager that 80 percent of Americans aren’t even capable of conceptualizing the lengths to which they are prepared to go to manifest their decades-long dream of a Marxist America.
This being the case, at nowhere in our history has there been a greater potential for armed conflict between the government and the American people. Consequently, preserving Americans’ Second Amendment rights has never been more important.
