Petraeus: Murdoch wanted to bankroll presidential bid

(London Telegraph) David Petraeus was urged to run for the US presidency by one of Rupert Murdoch’s American lieutenants and told that the media tycoon would bankroll his campaign, it has emerged.

The former CIA director, who resigned last month after having an extramarital affair with his biographer, declined in order to protect his personal life. “My wife would divorce me,” he said. “And I love my wife”.

Mr Petraeus learned while commanding US forces in Afghanistan last year that Roger Ailes, the chairman of Mr Murdoch’s Fox television network, wanted him to challenge President Barack Obama.
