British PM vows vote on EU membership

(WASHINGTON TIMES) Prime Minister David Cameron said he will let British voters decide whether or not to stay in the European Union if his Conservative Party wins the general election in 2015.

“We will give the British people a referendum with a very simple in-or-out choice to stay in the EU,” Mr. Cameron said, according to an Associated Press report. “Or, come out altogether. It will be an in-out referendum.”

His statements come at a time of fiscal worry among eurozone nations. Spain and Greece, particularly, have been struggling to overcome unemployment rates that have hit 26 percent. And Eurostat, the European Union’s statistical agency, reported Wednesday that total government debt for all 17 countries that rely on the euro stood at nearly 90 percent of gross domestic product — not much changed from the previous year’s 87 percent.
