Vote near on tougher New York gun laws

(POST-STANDARD) Syracuse, N.Y. — New York lawmakers appear poised to vote on stricter gun laws, a move that would make the state the first to enact more weapons bans in the wake of shootings in Newtown, Conn., and Webster, N.Y., according to the leader of the New York State Assembly.

“I believe we’re very, very close to an agreement on a bill,” said Assembly Sheldon Silver, D-Manhattan, today in Albany. “We are going to ban assault weapons. We are going to eliminate all the loopholes that existed previously.”

Silver said one of the few outlying issues involves how to provide extra security at schools and how to adjust state aid to pay for that.
