Mrs. Clinton's Benghazi testimony bears out author Theodore Dalrymple's assertion that the West ends "not with a bang but a whimper." A terrorist mob overruns a U.S. mission, murders the ambassador and guards, and a teary-eyed secretary of state asks the senators months later, "What difference does it make?"

Indeed. What difference does it make? Does it matter that a usurping president and grossly incompetent secretary of state lied to the nation throughout the presidential election regarding the cause of the attacks? And what difference does it make that U.S. foreign policy is conducted by Mrs. Clinton's personal attaché and a practicing Muslim, Huma Abedin?

What difference does it make that the U.S. Department of Justice prosecuted a YouTube filmmaker over a video that none of the attacking mob even saw? What difference does it make that the U.S. Senate holds public hearings, when the results have been negotiated and agreed upon in private for weeks or months ahead of the hearings?

What difference does it make that inauguration attendance doesn't reflect election results? What difference does it make that presidential voting now holds all the significance of "liking" someone on Facebook?

What difference does it make that America is broke, but can't stop spending borrowed money? What difference does it make that the dollar will be inflated by a factor of ten and the retirees who put their money into government bonds reduced to poverty, so the federal government can claim to have repaid its debts?

What difference does it make that higher education has become higher indoctrination. Instead of learning to think, students learn to parrot leftist propaganda and DNC talking points and learn to get their Facebook friends out to vote? What difference does it make that we no longer graduate engineers or make things in America?

What difference does it make that our "foreign" intelligence services now archive your every communication for future prosecutions, once you break a yet-to-be made law? What difference does it make if 30,000 police and government regulatory drones surveil your every move and watch you in your backyard? What difference does it make if Visa and Mastercard record your travel destinations and archive the information for the federal government? What difference does it make if search engines record your every search and sell it to advertisers and government? What difference does it make when an illegal federal police force rounds up you and your Facebook friends, because you posted that at the next town-hall meeting, your elected representative was going to get an earful?

What difference does it make, whether you are a passenger on the Ship of Fools, or a bit player in the Theatre of the Absurd? Either way, your children and their children will be shining the shoes of Chinese and Indian businessmen as they pass through the airport, eagerly awaiting any spare yuan the travelers pass their way.

What difference could it possibly make?
