(Vallejo Times-Herald) Though taking pedestrian safety into his own hands may not have been the wisest move, many of Anthony Cardenas' neighbors have his back.
Cardenas, 52, of Vallejo, was arrested Thursday for painting an unauthorized crosswalk near his home on Sonoma Boulevard at Illinois Street.
On Friday, he arrived home from jail to a hero's welcome as people on the street stopped to wave at him and holler greetings. Waiting TV crews also were there to interview him a day after the Times-Herald reported his arrest.

"He does nothing but try to do good," said Vanessa Arriola, who works at a hair salon across the street from Cardenas' house. "He's harmless as a person can be, to be completely honest. And the fact that we have supposedly no cops here in Vallejo ... for this (the arrest) to happen ... it's ridiculous."
