Black-dog syndrome: Superstitions often deadly

(SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE) While volunteering at Bay Area animal shelters 15 years ago, Jennifer Mieuli Jameson of San Francisco observed that when a new dog would arrive, other workers would often wince and say, “He’s black.”

After that, she began to notice that black dogs had a lower chance of getting adopted than their light-coated counterparts, leading to a disproportionate number of euthanizations – a phenomenon known as black dog syndrome.

“It was one of those things that once I knew about it, I couldn’t turn away,” she said.
