Liberals have long debated that national borders are no longer necessary because of the "withering away or the state," and free-trade encourages peaceful cooperation and discourages aggression. However, with the Russian takeover of Crimea, liberals seem to be more concerned with the borders of Ukraine than that of the United States. Furthermore, the claim that free trade discourages aggression appears to be false.
Ukraine is a case study in what happens when borders are not enforced. In this case, ethnic Russians who identify with Russia instead of Ukraine take over a portion of the country. America claims to be a "melting pot" in which national identities are discarded and formed into a new identity. Increasingly, immigrants are encouraged to retain their cultural and religious heritage in America, maintaining a separate identity than the rest of the country. As in Ukraine, this could lead to separatist movements of independence.
The last time Ukraine was invaded by the Soviet Union, Western media barely covered the story. In fact, some journalist even denied the events that occurred. Until the U.S. starts controlling its own border, the liberal media should quit reporting the Ukraine story and return to the tradition of Walter Duranty. The West has been successfully lulled to sleep. Eventually, the armed struggle will knock on our border, and then the media will claim a fascist attempt to maintain the union. After all, our own leaders glorify Mao's quote, "Political power grows from the barrel of a gun."
