(London Metro) After having an operation to install cochlear ear implants, this woman can now hear for the first time in her life.

Having suffered from a rare condition called Usher Syndrome since birth, Joanne Milne is overcome with joy when she hears her consultant read out the days of the week to her.

The 39-year-old from Gateshead, who was also registered blind in her 20s because of the condition, fights back the tears as she tells the doctor that hearing her own voice is ‘very, very strange’.
