(O.C. Register) -- The House Oversight Committee recently voted to recommend that the House of Representatives hold former Internal Revenue Service official Lois Lerner in criminal contempt of Congress. Lerner, who led the IRS Exempt Organizations division that targeted applicants based on their political beliefs, failed to meet her legal obligations to answer questions. Despite her obstruction, the ongoing investigation into IRS targeting has learned much since targeting was first confirmed nearly a year ago.
The targeting of “Tea Party” and other conservative groups was political. Throughout 2010, President Obama and his congressional allies loudly chastised the Supreme Court for its Citizens United decision, which struck down certain bans on political spending as violations of the First Amendment. The president even famously criticized the decision in his 2010 State of the Union address. Documents show this rhetoric was not lost on Lois Lerner and others at the IRS.
