(Politico) Majority Leader Harry Reid warned that the Senate will work on weekends in September, even as the chamber prepares to go on a five-week recess in a matter of hours.
The Democratic leader said that the chamber will return to vote to fund the government past Sept. 30, reauthorize the Export-Import Bank and pass a defense authorization bill.
Reid also said the chamber will vote on a series of measures that have little chance of becoming law: Raising the minimum wage, rebutting the Supreme Court’s Hobby Lobby Decision and amending the Constitution to allow Congress to regulate campaign spending. Democrats hope to remind voters that Republicans oppose those poll-tested measures less than two months before an election that will determine which party controls the Senate in 2015.
