(SOUTH FLORIDA SUN-SENTINEL) — Beware the sextortion scam sweeping across online dating sites, the Broward Sheriff's Office warns.
The scammers persuade prospective daters to send sexually explicit photos. Once received, they identify themselves as law enforcement officers and say the photo was sent to a minor and to avoid arrest you better pay up, said Keyla Concepcion, a spokeswoman for the sheriff's office.
More than 100 victims have fallen prey to the sextortion scam, paying between $500 to $1,500 to try to circumvent arrest, Concepcion said.
