Well, Iraq has been thoroughly destroyed and has collapsed into civil war and chaos. What a surprise. Our neocon empire builders have failed again in spectacular fashion. After all the lies that led us there in the first place, from George W. Bush and Condoleezza Rice talking about mushroom clouds over American cities to Colin Powell and his mobile biological weapons labs crisscrossing Iraq, the depth of our failure there is finally being realized. The perpetrators are getting rich, giving million-dollar speeches and selling books is merely typical.
The reality is that Iraq, like Vietnam, is an American-made catastrophe. The likelihood of anything good coming from the trillions of dollars wasted, the lost and broken lives of our soldiers and the hundreds of thousands of dead Iraqis is virtually zero. The abandoned megabases dotting the country stand as a testament to another failed and dying empire.
The neocon dreams of a greater Middle East and a global Pax Americana enforced by American weapons of war lies in ruins in the deserts of Iraq and soon in the mountains of Afghanistan. The most unbelievable part of this tragedy is that the very people who brought about all of this mindless destruction are now screaming that we need to go back to Iraq and "fix" what is broken. It is hard to believe that anyone anywhere would ever listen to these people again, but it seems they still have enough clout to intimidate Obama into a do-over. This can only lead to more of the above heaped on an already ruined country. Hopefully the American people will not allow this to happen.

The way Obama, Hillary Clinton and Susan Rice were shouted down when they wanted to repeat past failures by invading Syria is at least a hopeful sign that Americans have finally learned from our past failures. Of course, in a perfect twist of irony, it took the former head of the Soviet KGB to talk us off the ledge on that one. Unfortunately, Obama has bowed to the neocon war machine and started new airstrikes in Iraq, this time to stop ISIS, another manifestation of Bush's failed invasion. But what happens when they fail? Drone strikes, and when they fail, send in the troops.
Sadly, empire builders never give up their imperial fantasies of their own accord and always end up in defeat and ruin. If we do not change course soon, we will share the fate of all the world's past empires.
