A new study has revealed that the most popular name for men and boys in Oslo, Norway, now is Mohammed.
“It is very exciting,” Jørgen Ouren of Statistics Norway said in a report in The Local.
The report said a new population count of Oslo found 4,801 men and boys named Mohammed, or variations of the name.
That puts it ahead of both Jan, with 4,667, and Per, with 4,155.
Mohammed already is the top name for babies in Olso for four years running, but it’s the first time the name tops the men’s list for the Norwegian capital, The Local said.
Norwegian Muslims are estimated at 150,000 of the country’s 4.5 million population, mostly of Pakistan, Somali, Iraqi and Moroccan backgrounds, says On Islam website that promotes Islam.
Norway has nearly 90 Muslim organizations and Islamic centers, according to the site.
In a separate report, On Islam noted that in 2013, Muhammad became the most popular name for newborn babies in England and Wales.
Figures from the Office for National Statistics found Muhammad topped Oliver that year.
Britain is home to a Muslim minority of nearly 2.7 million.
