You're right. What have these wars gotten us? There's no intelligent strategy in their prosecutions or any common sense applied to the aftermaths. Has dropping bombs on tribes that have been mortal enemies with each other for 1,400 years solved anything? It's like putting a hand in a hornets' nest and trying to get control of it. Strongman Saddam Hussein of Iraq warned the West that if he were removed, the gates of hell would be opened in the region. Gadhafi of Libya warned the West of much the same thing. Were they wrong?
