The Wall Street Journal and NBC released a poll this week that gives a first glimpse into the psychology of the electorate going into the midterm elections. Women are less motivated to turn out because they are distrustful of Democrats for their handling of national security matters. Men are more motivated to vote this time, and men continue to support Republicans by larger margins.
Some are predicting an end to the gender gap that has been a cornerstone of Democrat consultants' strategies for decades. Gender may still have a fading grip this time on races in states like New Hampshire and North Carolina. But in Colorado, Arkansas and Texas, the gender card seems to have lost its effectiveness.
Another poll said that in just one month, women have moved from 47 percent of female likely voters favoring a Democrat-controlled Congress, with 40 percent of women favoring Republicans, to a whopping 44 percent now preferring Republicans, while the Democrats have dropped to only 42 percent.

These polls are confirmation of everything we wrote in our book, "What Women Really Want," and everything we have been saying in our national media tour. Women have caught on to the fact that this administration sold them a bill of goods, and Democrats aren't giving women what they really want.
TRENDING: 'Impeach Barack Obama': Lindsey Graham suggests liberals' worst nightmare
In September, Ann Marie Murrell, Morgan Brittany and I saw this shift as we traveled the country with the release of our new book, and we talked about the trend we were predicting.

We believed then and we believe now, as we said in our book, that security is the No. 1 issue to women, but that security is two pronged. Their family has to be safe from threats and women need to feel financially secure.
Women have been told again and again that the priority for women is government-enforced equal pay, birth control and access to abortion on demand. But Murrell, Brittany and I countered that and were attacked by the usual suspects when we said women have believed a lie, and they are waking up to the truth.
Women believed Obama would provide financial security. He sure talked a good game when he said he would fix the economy, but all he has done is more than doubled the national debt we are leaving to our children. He has done nothing to increase private-sector job growth, and economically the country is still on its knees. As student-loan debt, grocery and gas prices continue to increase, women find themselves struggling to make ends meet and having to work. That is reflected in polling now that says 60 percent of voters think the American economy is "poor."
While the president and his regime talk about equal pay, women have made it clear that what they really want is the ability to live on one income, and not be dependent on having two incomes or on the government to do it for them. This administration has made it clear that the 84 percent of women who want a lower tax burden, less red tape on their businesses and more private-sector small business growth to make it easier on their families are simply not a priority. Women have gotten that message, and their votes are likely to reflect that in 2014.
But women are complex. Security for women goes beyond economic security into national security, and the new poll reflects that, as well. It says three-quarters of likely voters say terrorism, the threat of the Islamic state and health-related issues like Ebola are paramount.

Now even prominent feminists are coming out against the Democrats' mishandling of our national security. Tina Brown, noted former editor of the Daily Beast and Newsweek, commented that Obama is making women feel "unsafe."
The Democrats' top campaign issues are Obamacare and open borders. Both of these make American families less safe and frighten women to the core. Obamacare has seen its failure from Day 1, with the billion-dollar failed website, and now with the Ebola fail. Obama promised to open borders by executive order, but has been able to accomplish it already by turning border agents into babysitters. That is bringing hordes of illegals with diseases into our country, sitting at school desks next to our children. That also means terrorists crossing into the U.S. after they train at ISIS camps south of our border. None of this makes voters likely to support the party of failed policies like Obamacare, Islamic benignancy and open borders.
That is why it's further validation of our contention in our book that what women really want is peace through strength, as Reagan implemented. Voters now trust the GOP by more than a 22-point margin to bring America through an international crisis.
All in all, 70 percent of those surveyed say America is headed in the wrong direction, and 60 percent place that blame directly on this president and his administration. Stories about North Carolina Sen. Kay Hagan skipping out on Armed Services meetings don't help. Couple that with Obama no-showing at more than half of his National Security Briefings, and none of it is helping the Democrats convince women that National Security is a priority with them, let alone a skill.

There is very little time for Democrats to change an impression made over six years and move the votes they need to win in 2014. Republicans, however, need to take this opportunity and assure female voters that they actually understand their psychological awakening, and are willing to be the party of women.
The GOP needs to affirm the priorities of the female voter, and once given the mantle of trust by the American woman, assure her that they will honor the trust she has given them with a secured border, an overhaul of Obamacare, a revised tax system that favors free markets and small businesses so women can stay home if they so choose and a strong, secure national defense.
Women can't be played as easily as the media and consultants might think. Women are beginning to understand that there is more to life than government-provided $15 per month "free" birth control. There are life-and-death issues that really matter. Women believe they can control themselves sexually and otherwise, and they aren't victims to their urges, or slaves to their government. Women are truly empowered with that knowledge, and are likely to continue to explore other ways they have been psychologically manipulated by those who want them for their votes. If the "gender gap" is really on its way out, then I say don't let that slamming door hit you.
