(AL.com) — BIRMINGHAM, Alabama - A former Huffman High School teacher, who was arrested on charges he had sexual relations with a 14-year-old student, pleaded guilty Monday to a reduced charge and was sentenced to probation in a plea deal with prosecutors.
Phillip Smith III, 42, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of endangering the welfare of a child in a hearing before Jefferson County Circuit Judge Clyde Jones.
Smith, under the plea deal with the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office, was given a suspended 12-month jail sentence and was placed on two years unsupervised probation. Smith also must complete 25 hours of community service on the litter squad and pay a $250 fine, plus court costs.
