Clock ticking on Sheriff Joe's Obama probe

The midterm elections are around the corner, and if the Republicans win the Senate – which is a possibility, though it will not be easy – they will have the opportunity to do what should have been done long before now: to set up a formal inquiry into the numerous grave irregularities in Mr. Obama's birth certificate.

For Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County, Arizona, the clock is ticking on the investigation of the manifestly bogus "birth certificate" that is still posted at the crime scene that is the White House website.

The midterms are the last election before Mr. Obama's eight-year tenancy of the White House expires without the option to renew. If the sheriff cannot act now, on the basis of the overwhelming evidence in his possession, then Mr. Obama will survive to the end of his second unlawful term as "president."

One of the many dismal failures of the GOP since 2008 has been its failure to get to grips with the birth certificate issue.

The reason for the Republicans' cowardice was very clearly spelled out to me by a senior and experienced GOP congressman over dinner at my club in Washington, D.C., a couple of years ago. "We all know the birth certificate is bogus," he said, "but we also know that anyone who dares to raise the issue will have his or her reputation trashed by the communist left."

In my assessment, it is only when the GOP commands both the Senate and the House that it may find what in English we should call the cojones to do something about the birth certificate.

When I first visited Sheriff Joe some years ago, it was at once apparent that he had more than enough credible evidence to go before a Federal District Court and demand orders of the court obliging the extremely reluctant "Democrat" administration in Hawaii to hand over for forensic examination not only the original "birth certificate" but also the relevant birth records of the Kapi'olani hospital. The attorney general of Arizona, in failing to permit the sheriff to apply for the necessary orders, is guilty of the grossest negligence.

When Mike Zullo, the sheriff's chief investigator, visited Hawaii with a colleague and contacted the police there in the normal way to report that they were carrying out an investigation, and then went to the Hawaii Health Department to try to interview certain officials, the department, instead of agreeing to assist the criminal investigation, called the police to have the sheriff's investigators removed from the premises.

When I later visited Hawaii and, in the presence of a senior lawyer, handed over to the police a summary of the evidence that the "birth certificate" was bogus, they referred the file to the state's attorney general, a "Democrat" who put politics before duty and ordered them not do what they had wanted to do – investigate.

When I also visited Washington, D.C., in the company of a concerned citizen who telephoned the Secret Service to report the irregularities in the "birth certificate," the Secret Service at first said they would send agents immediately to see us. But, of course, no one came.

Now, if there were no evidence of irregularity, or if the evidence were equivocal, the decision of the entire apparatus of the relevant state and federal governments to do nothing would be pardonable – though it would still be wrong of the attorneys general in Arizona and Hawaii to refuse to have the matter properly investigated just like any other alleged crime.

But the evidence that the "birth certificate" is bogus is overwhelming. Don't take my word for it: Take the word of Sheriff Joe himself, who, like his chief investigator, Mike Zullo, has faced the hatred and personal vilification of the communist left for having dared to agree to the request of 250 of his electors that he should investigate the bogus document.

Sheriff Joe, an experienced and much-decorated top cop, is not the sort to play politics on this or any issue. Indeed, he was initially reluctant to investigate because he could not believe the "Democrats" would go so far as to arrange a bogus "birth certificate" for no less a person than the "president" of the United States.

However, he did his duty – which is more than can be said for just about everyone else involved in this affair. And he concluded, after months of investigation, that the document at the White House website was unquestionably a forgery. He came out and said so publicly, knowing the personal risks he ran in doing so.

Sure enough, the "Justice" Department mounted a scandalously fictitious "investigation" of him in the hope of diverting him from his duty. They failed. Sheriff Joe is no wimp.

Now, I very much understand the embarrassment and humiliation that the entire governing class of the United States would have to endure if a conviction resulted from the prosecution of the person who forged the "birth certificate." (I am not free to say who she is.)

For there would then be an undeniable question mark over Mr. Obama's eligibility to occupy the White House. Impeachment would inevitably follow. Furthermore, all of the controversial bills passed during his lamentable "administration" would have to be stricken from the record. Bye-bye Soetero"care."

All of these consequences of the bogus "birth certificate" would be severe. They would be embarrassing. But not half as embarrassing as the knowledge that the world is sniggering behind its hand at the failure of the United States to maintain a system of justice sufficiently robust to bring prosecutions where the evidence is so plain.

If the GOP wins the Senate, and even if it does not win the Senate, let it at last find the guts to do what it should have done long before now. Let it say yes to Sheriff Joe's request that it should initiate a congressional investigation of this affair. And let the states' attorneys general of Hawaii and Arizona step down. They should be ashamed of themselves.

They are not fit to hold office. Let theirs, together with that of the head of the Secret Service, be the first of countless heads that must roll throughout the governing class to root out the corruption of which the flagrantly bogus "birth certificate" is an enduring and disfiguring symbol. Enough is enough. It is time for Uncle Sam – and the GOP – to find the cojones to act.
