(Los Angeles Times) Two New York police officers on patrol in Brooklyn were shot and killed Saturday afternoon, a New York city councilman said..
"Unfortunately the latest information is that both officers have been pronounced dead at Woodhull Hospital," Councilman Robert Cornegy told a local TV station PIX 11. "This could not have come at a worse time."
The officers were approached by a gunman and shot while sitting in their car, he said. News outlets quoted unidentified witnesses who gave a similar account of the shooting. A handgun was recovered at the scene, Sgt. Lee Jones said.

A suspect in the shooting is in custody and has been taken to a Brooklyn hospital, Jones said.
