Why is Jeb Bush considered a leading candidate for the Republican nomination for the presidency in 2016 when his own mother disses him?
Do Republican establishment types really believe he would have any shot at the job in light of the recent campaign performances by Mitt Romney and John McCain who come from the same wing of the party?
Does the Republican Party really want to remain in the presidential wilderness by doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results?
I don’t know about you, but I can’t even imagine something worse for the country than a 2016 presidential contest between Jeb Bush and Hillary Clinton. There’s no way that could be good for the Republican Party. There’s no way that could be good for America.
So why are so many Republican “experts” touting it?
Evidently, the Republican establishment would rather lose with one of their own than to win with a Republican who is not one of them.
How bad is the Jeb Bush option?
Listen to what his mother, Barbara Bush, said about it a mere seven months ago: “We’ve had enough Bushes.”
Jeb: Are you listening to your mom?
She said flat out during an NBC interview Jeb shouldn’t run.
“There are a lot of great families,” she said. “It’s not just four families, or whatever. There are other people out there that are very qualified. We’ve had enough Bushes.”
It wasn’t said lightly, either.
Earlier in 2014, she told C-SPAN something very similar: “I think this is a great American country, and if we can’t find more than two or three families to run for high office, that’s silly.”
That’s his mother!
I have other reasons for dreading Jeb Bush.
It’s hard to imagine a worse Republican candidate when it comes to one of the biggest issues facing the country right now – illegal immigration and Barack Obama’s unconstitutional amnesty declaration.
Republicans are already fumbling the political football handed to them by the Democrats. After a smashing victory in November, Republican leadership in the House and Senate seems determined to give Obama a pass on this scandal – just as they have on Benghazi, IRS abuse, Fast and Furious, Solyndra, Obamacare lies and deception and so forth. Nominating someone who agrees with Obama and the Democrats on the border and illegal aliens would be a disaster.
It’s going to take a very strong president to reverse the damage inflicted on this country by eight years of Obama.
Jeb Bush is not the solution. He’s part of the problem – along with the rest of the Republican establishment he and his family represent. Jeb Bush won’t change the country’s direction in any meaningful way. Neither will Romney or Chris Christie or Paul Ryan or Marco Rubio.
The Republican Party has an abundance of fresh faces, rising stars and potential candidates with bold ideas and good skills. Contrast that strength with the Democratic Party. Pickings are slim over there when Elizabeth Warren is considered a rock star.
Unfortunately, the Republican establishment has set rules for the 2016 primary system that favor their guys and make it very difficult for candidates with less name recognition to win the nomination. With strong anti-establishment Republicans like Mike Huckabee, Ben Carson, Rand Paul, Scott Walker, John Kasich and Ted Cruz all flirting with runs, the establishment candidates also have the advantage of votes that will be split between many worthy contenders.
Jeb Bush can raise a lot of money on his name.
And that’s why I want to go on record early – in agreement with Barbara Bush – in opposing Jeb Bush as even a consideration for Republicans in 2016.
If his own mother can’t unequivocally and enthusiastically support him, who can?
