Philly mayor: Cops ‘increasingly afraid’ of community

PHILADELPHIA (CBS St. Louis/AP) — Action is needed to bolster public trust in the police in the aftermath of the killings of two unarmed black men by white police officers, two top Philadelphia officials told a national TV audience Sunday.

Mayor Michael Nutter and Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey participated in a panel discussion on NBC’s “Meet the Press” about the continuing demonstrations sparked by the shooting in Ferguson, Missouri, the chokehold death in New York City and the refusal of grand juries in both cases to indict the officers.

Ramsey, whom President Barack Obama recently named as co-chair of his Task Force on 21st Century Policing that is tasked with recommending ways to shore up public trust, said he is troubled that so many people view the justice system as unfair.
