(SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE) The Rev. Jesse Jackson’s clout may be fading a bit on the national level, but in Richmond he’s still a rock star — as evidenced by the head-of-state police escort he received the other day for his trip from San Francisco to an East Bay speaking engagement.
The Richmond Police Department dispatched five motorcycle cops and three squad cars to accompany Jackson across the Bay Bridge and up to his talk at the Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in Richmond. Even the cops say that at a cost of $1,500, it was a bit much.
“I have to admit, it was excessive,” said Richmond PD Capt. Mark Gagan. “It was poor judgment, and we are reviewing the matter.”
