In the two weeks since the Paris terrorist attacks, there has been a growing concern about “home-grown terrorists.” The radical Islamists who carried out the attack were not immigrants or terrorists hiding behind false identities. They were born and raised in France, yet they turned against their native homeland in joining the radical Islamist jihad.
Well, that should not be so surprising, and the problem is even more acute in the United States than in France despite relatively smaller numbers of Muslim immigrants. In both the U.S. and Europe, there is a dimension to the threat that is not widely discussed: Our own cultural rot is undermining our ability to deter and prevent this new kind of cultural treason – taking the side of the jihadist barbarian against our own Western values and institutions.
America today is well along the path to cultural suicide via cultural rot. We are abandoning the values and standards that made us a great nation and which attracted millions of immigrants to our shores. Instead of Ronald Reagan’s “shining city on a hill,” we are becoming a lost city sinking into a swamp.
Our cultural rot has many causes, but it is aided and accelerated by the cancerous doctrine first adopted by our elites and now rapidly spreading throughout our society, from education to entertainment and politics. That is the infectious doctrine of multiculturalism.
Multiculturalism is like a delicious Kool-Aid designed to lull us into a blind acceptance of cultural rot. More precisely, the multiculturalist Kool-Aid makes us blind to the rot that is expanding before our eyes.
When you cannot distinguish between heroes and villains, giants and dwarfs, and freedom versus slavery, you are falling into a cultural rot that leads to barbarism. And that barbarism does not come in only one form; it has many guises.
- It is cultural rot when you can kill 50 million unborn children in the name of “personal privacy” and pretend it is progress.
- It is cultural rot when “racism” is turned on its head and a person is judged guilty of racial discrimination if he fails to give extra weight to race in college admissions.
- It is cultural rot when the rule of law is abandoned and criminal aliens are released back into the community to commit more crimes in the name of “family reunification.”
- It is cultural rot when hucksters are called “celebrities” for serial extortion of private industry in not boycotting a facility, event or product if you pay a generous amount of money into their organization’s coffers.
- It is cultural rot when middle-school children are taught that American history is one long story of greed, exploitation and racial oppression – from Christopher Columbus to Selma and from Bunker Hill to Hiroshima.
- And our culture is surely rotten to the core when the president of the United States can openly defy the Constitution and make laws by administrative edict the same way barbarian societies have done for thousands of years – all to the applause of our media and educational elites.
With regard to growing threat from militant Islamist jihad, multiculturalism serves as a set of self-imposed moral handcuffs preventing us from confronting that threat effectively.
To the multiculturalist, the jihadists are attacking us only because we have earned their wrath through decades or centuries of colonialism and imperialism. To multiculturalists like Obama, we cannot occupy the high ground and have many sins to atone for.
Multiculturalism is the seedbed of our cultural rot because it denies and actively undermines any belief that our civilization is morally superior to any other – which is an especially fatal handicap when being attacked by a fanatic religion claiming authority from God.
- When you deny there is any valid moral difference between the Islamist barbarians waving hatchets at children in African orphanages run by Christian missionaries and American soldiers shooting armed terrorists in Iraq, you have surrendered your moral compass.
- When barbarians can plan and act out their murderous deeds and then be arrested for “workplace violence,” the barbarians have won. Cultural idiots are now writing our laws and running our courts.
The problems that come with uncontrolled illegal immigration and open borders would not be one-tenth as serious if immigrants were being properly assimilated. But true assimilation is today expressly rejected by the multiculturalist elites who run our civic institutions. Our cultural dissolution is expedited by uncontrolled immigration, but it is not caused by it. The cause is multiculturalism and its guiding philosophy, cultural relativism.
We will see a continual escalation of both home grown jihadists and home-grown barbarism until we regain our cultural footing. Keeping out the foreign jihadists will be far easier than turning off the assembly line producing our home grown barbarians.
