Rep. Andre Carson, D-Ind., has declared that tea partiers on Capitol Hill would like “to see African-Americans hanging from trees.”
And he suggested that U.S. schools should be modeled after Islamic madrassas, where education is based on the Quran.
Now, he’s going to be privy to some of the nation’s most sensitive intelligence.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi announced she will appoint him as the first Muslim lawmaker on the body’s Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, Politico reported Tuesday.
A senior Democratic aide said Pelosi announced the move during a weekly caucus of minority Democrats.
It would make Carson the first Muslim to serve on the committee that receives intelligence on the threat of Islamic militants in the Middle East.
In a National Review column about Carson just weeks ago, Islam analyst Daniel Pipes, director of the Middle East Forum, wrote that Carson represents the “Islamists’ choice for the House of Representatives.”
Pipes described Islamists as Muslims “who seek to replace the Constitution with the Quran and apply Islamic law in its entirety and severity.”
“Until now, their campaign contributions have been unknown,” he explained.
But now a Middle East Forum Islamist Watch project has provided a first look at the dimensions of thelobby. It revealed that the Council on American-Islamic Relations, Islamic Circle of North America, Islamic Society of North America, Muslim Alliance in North America, Muslim American Society and the Muslim Public Affairs Council contributed about $700,000 to federal candidates in recent years.
The contributions include, he said, $430,000 from CAIR, an “unindicted co-conspirator” in a terror-financing trial in which the federal judge found “ample evidence” of CAIR’s links to Hamas.
“In Indiana, Democratic representative Andre Carson has received almost $34,000 from Islamist sources for his congressional runs since 2008. … That’s the same Carson who appeared at the 2012 annual ICNA-MAS convention, where he encouraged American schools to look ‘at the model we have in our madrasses … where the foundation is the Quran,'” Pipes wrote.
Politico reported in 2011 that Carson, identified as a top lawmaker in the Congressional Black Caucus, said at a CBC event in Miami that some in Congress would “love to see us as second-class citizens” and “some of them in Congress right now of this tea party movement would love to see you and me … hanging on a tree.”
At the time, the report said Carson’s spokesman, Jason Tomcsi, stood by the comments, which were on tape.
The comments were “in response to frustration voiced by many in Miami and in his home district in Indianapolis regarding Congress’s inability to bolster the economy.”
The spokesman said, “The congressman used strong language because the tea party agenda jeopardizes our most vulnerable and leaves them without the ability to improve their economic standing.
“We are talking about child nutrition, job creation, job training, housing assistance, and Head Start, and that is just the beginning,” Tomcsi claimed. “A child without basic nutrition, secure housing and quality education has no real chance at a meaningful and productive life.”
At the American Thinker, M. Catharine Evans wrote about Carson’s family ties.
“Andre Carson was raised by his grandmother Julia Carson. A state legislator for 18 years and a congresswoman for a decade, Ms. Carson had a friendly relationship with the hateful Louis Farrakhan throughout Andre’s childhood. In fact, Julia and Louis went ‘way back’ according to a 2008 Indianapolis Star report. Andre’s wife stated that Farrakhan was with Julia the night her grandson was born in 1974. The anti-Semitic Nation of Islam leader who called white people ‘devils’ told mourners at her funeral in 2007 ‘I was with her in her discipleship.'”
Carson’s suggestion that American schools being based on the Quran came in his address to the ICNA convention.
“American will never tap into educational innovation and ingenuity without looking at the model that we have in our madrassas, in our schools, where innovation is encouraged, where the foundation is the Quran,” Carson said. “And that model that we are pushing in some of our schools meets the multiple needs of students.”
He also said America “must understand that she needs Muslims.”
