It isn't easy to be a proud American in most colleges and universities today, and talk-radio host and author Michael Savage has decided to do something about it.
He announced on "The Savage Nation" program Tuesday the launch of an essay contest in which his Paul Revere Society will award a $20,000 scholarship grant to each of five winners.
The applicants – who must be enrolled in a two- or four-year accredited institution and demonstrate financial need – are to submit an essay of about 500 words (double-spaced) on "What does it mean to be an American."

In an interview with WND, Savage noted many American young people are "locked out" of scholarships that are geared toward demographics such as children of migrant farm workers, certain ethnic groups or immigrants.

"I wanted to make sure that mine is open to all races and religions, but that there is one unifying theme, which is American and Americanism – what is an American," Savage said.
"That seems to have been forgotten in the colleges today."

Savage said he will be the judge.
"As an immigrant's son, I think I'm as good a judge as any for a deserving kid," he said.
The contest begins Wednesday and concludes March 31. The winners will be announced July 4.
He plans to have the winners on his radio show, if they wish, and will read the winning essays on the air.

"I think it will be a nice thing to talk about over the coming year, because there is so much negative news out there. So much backbiting that I think we in the media have somewhat of an obligation to be leaders instead of snipers," he said.
He hopes that "in a small way, it will help mold a future generation."
Savage said that along with the good, he expects some "outlandish" submissions, given the "twisted nature of the universities and college's today."
Many students, he said, have been "brainwashed since kindergarten into thinking America is evil."

He wants to "counter these vehement, vicious anti-Americans who seem to be running everything, including the media."
"Imagine giving an essay contest to the media," Savage mused, or to Congress.
"I wonder what Obama or Nancy Pelosi would write? What would Dianne Feinstein write, who put a knife in the back of our Central Intelligence Agency?" he asked.
Savage said if the contest works as he hopes, it will continue.
"This should be a legacy issue for me, because I'll fund it for a long period of time," he said. "This is only the first go round."
