(NBC NEWS) It was the coldest morning in Kentucky in 10 years. At Niagara Falls, the majestic rushing water was obscured by blocks of craggy ice. In Florida, the start of spring training felt less than springlike.
Welcome to the big chill. A blast of blisteringly cold air that some forecasters call the Siberian Express shattered temperature records on Thursday. And the records left standing in many cities probably won't last the night.
"Our city just shuts down," said Dana Marie, a waitress in Nashville, Tennessee, which bottomed out at 4 degrees, told TODAY. "You know, people in the North want to make fun. And I get it. It's just that we're not used to it."
