Barack Obama wasn't wrong in what he said at the National Prayer Breakfast about the Crusades, slavery and the Jim Crow South being justified and rationalized by some in the name of Christianity.
It was, indeed.
What was inappropriate, and, in fact, outrageous, was the context of his raising it – as a kind of moral and religious equivalence lesson in dismissing Islam's primary role in genocide, murder, rape, mutilation, oppression of women, abuse of children, torture and terrorism throughout the world today.

"Unless we get on our high horse and think that this is unique to some other place, remember that during the Crusades and Inquisition, people committed terrible deeds in the name of Christ," Obama said. "In our home country, slavery and Jim Crow all too often was justified in the name of Christ."
What he failed to note was as important as what he did say.

The Crusades – responsible for the wonton killing of Jews, Christians and Muslims by people calling themselves Christians – has been over for 1,000 years and has been widely condemned by most everyone, including followers of Jesus.
Slavery was not only ended 150 years ago in the U.S., it was ended largely because of Christians who saw it as immoral and unbiblical.

And also neglected by Obama in his remarks is the fact that the Jim Crow South was dismantled by the leadership of Martin Luther King Jr., again in the name of Christianity.
If he forgot one more salient fact, it was that slavery and continued oppression of blacks and those who fought for their freedom through the 1960s was largely orchestrated by his political party – the Democratic Party – of which the Ku Klux Klan represented the military arm.
Am I forgetting anything?
Oh, yes – his main point: Despite all the evidence to the contrary, Obama persistently claims a moral and spiritual equivalence between Islam and Christianity, no doubt a legacy of listening to Jeremiah Wright sermons for 20 years.

"So it is not unique to one group or one religion," Obama said. "There is a tendency in us, a simple tendency that can pervert and distort our faith."
However, the reality we face in the world today is that most of the murder, rape, mutilation, oppression of women, abuse of children, torture and terrorism throughout the world today is indeed committed by Muslims in the name of Islam, Muhammad and Allah.
It's true that Christianity was, as Obama put it, hijacked by people for "their own murderous ends." No one should dispute this. A brilliant reminder of the crimes that have been perpetrated by profaning and blaspheming the name of Jesus can be found in a new breakthrough book by Joel Richardson – "When a Jew Rules the World." Christians should humble themselves over the abuses committed in the name of their faith, Richardson concludes. We shouldn't dismiss the historical record by simply saying we didn't have anything to do with it. The church does need to repent, because it's still dealing with the root of the problem, which has been characterized as "replacement theology" – the notion that God's promises to Israel have been transferred to Christians.
Islam suffers from its own form of replacement theology – the idea that God's promises to both Jews and Christians have been transferred to Muslims, also dealt with by Richardson, who reminds Christians of the essential "Jewishness" of their faith in which the Jewish Messiah is worshipped as the anointed Son of God, who is returning to earth to rule and reign over it from Jerusalem.

There is a temptation to refute everything Obama says because of his track record of failed policies, deliberate deception and the confusion he seems to sow every time he opens his mouth.
Thoughtful Christians, however, should recognize the most effective lies, like those told in the Garden of Eden, are often mixed with some truth.
That's what makes Obama such a profoundly dangerous demagogue.
